Newport News City Council Approves Changes to Vehicle License Fee Billing Schedule

Newport News, VA - At its October 14 meeting, the Newport News City Council approved changes to the Vehicle License Fee (VLF) billing schedule to improve efficiency and better serve taxpayers. Beginning in 2026, the VLF due date will move from December 5 to June 5.

The adjustment is designed to reduce the number of bills generated for vehicles sold before January 1, minimizing the need for refunds and making the system more efficient for both taxpayers and the city.

Under the new schedule:

  • Vehicle License Fees will now be due annually on June 5.
  • Vehicles obtained after January 15 will be assessed a prorated fee.
  • Refunds will continue to be issued for vehicles sold, traded, or otherwise disposed of within the same calendar year.

City staff will launch a comprehensive communications campaign to ensure residents are aware of the new due date and understand the proration and refund processes. Outreach will include email notifications, updates to the city's website, social media, and media engagement.
