Jakarta, 11 March 2026: ERIA held Session #4 of itsToolkit for Trade Policy Analysis Training, titled'Computational Modelling of Trade Flows: Partial and General Equilibrium.'The session forms part of ERIA's broader capacity-building initiative, organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia, to strengthen analytical capabilities for evidence-based trade policymaking.

The session featured a lecture byDr Ben Shepherd, who introduced key concepts and practical applications of computational trade modelling, focusing onpartial equilibrium and general equilibrium models, as well as the emerging academic framework ofNew Quantitative Trade Models (NQTM). The lecture examined how these modelling approaches can be used to simulate trade policy scenarios, assess sector-specific impacts, and estimate the broader economic effects of policy changes such as tariffs, trade agreements, and regulatory measures.

Following the lecture,Mr Arvin Imamsatria Widijanto, Research Associate in ERIA's Economics Unit, presented the institute's ongoing efforts to support evidence-based policymaking through data-driven research, analytical tools, and policy capacity development. His presentation also highlighted ERIA's recent analytical work assessing the impact of United States tariff policies on ASEAN economies. The simulation results formed a central component of theASEAN Geoeconomics Report 2025, titled'This Time It Is Different: ASEAN's Agency in Shaping the New Global Agenda.'

The session concluded with an interactive discussion, during which participants exchanged views on the practical application of computational trade models in policy analysis.

Through this training programme, ERIA continues to support policymakers and stakeholders in strengthening analytical capacity and advancing evidence-based trade policy development in Indonesia and across the ASEAN region.
