Alsobrooks Statement on Marty Makary Resignation

May 12, 2026

WASHINGTON, DC - Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) issued the following statement after news that Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary resigned after pressure from the White House:

"Marty Makary is just one of the many unqualified conspiracy theorists and sycophants working for RFK Jr. The more of his cronies that are fired or resign, the better.

"Makary proved all my fears about him true. His entire tenure at the FDA has been marked by chaos - from reckless staffing cuts that gutted the institutional knowledge at the agency, upending the scientific review process and undermining access to vaccines, and leaving patients with rare diseases behind by slow-walking approvals of life-saving treatments.

"At his confirmation hearing, Marty Makary tried to convince me that the swaths of civil servants RFK Jr. fired at FDA deserved it - that they were lazy, shiftless, and didn't show up to their jobs. Well, it took a year, but thankfully, now, the most unqualified person at the FDA is finally out of the building.

"Even with this ouster, I am concerned that this Administration has ramped up politicization at the FDA, pushing it to abandon public health considerations and approve tobacco products that can get in the hands of children. While Makary leaving is a step in the right direction, we cannot restore trust in public health and safety until RFK Jr. resigns or is fired."
