Lincoln Joins Global Effort to Set Standards for Data Centers

Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird today announced that Lincoln has joined a worldwide initiative focused on setting standards for the sustainable location and operation of data centers. Led by mayors in 42 cities, the Global Urban Data Centres Pact seeks to recognize data centers as important urban infrastructure whose growth should not come at the expense of city climate targets, natural resources, or energy prices.

"As data center construction expands across the country, cities have a responsibility to protect their natural resources, safeguard residents' quality of life and ensure the community's long-term vitality," Mayor Gaylor Baird said. "By joining this effort, Lincoln is helping advance a thoughtful approach to managing that growth responsibly."

Through the Pact, cities work to establish criteria for the development of data centers while safeguarding communities and the climate. That vision for data centers includes four key aspects:

Strategic Integration

Facilities should be sited in collaboration with local governments to minimize public health burdens and align with city planning and climate targets.

Sustainability and Resource Efficiency

Centers should reduce the environmental impact and reliance on shared resources through clean energy, circular water use, and heat recovery.

Accountability and Community Focus

Measurable data on sustainability and public health metrics should be shared with the community. Tangible local economic benefits should include prioritizing procurement from local businesses and creation of green jobs through investment in local programs.

Cost Security and Shared Prosperity

Centers should fund any necessary infrastructure upgrades and invest in communities by directing surplus revenue generated into dedicated revolving funds to support local sustainability and social infrastructure.
