Robert Brooks is a very involved community member and active participant on non-profit and organizational boards, including Karmanos Cancer Institute's Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC). He is also an eight-year multiple myeloma survivor. It all started in 2017 while golfing; as he swung the club, his back popped. After working with a chiropractor, he ended up having sciatica and later learned in 2018 that he had multiple myeloma, a blood cancer where abnormal plasma cells build up in the bone marrow and form tumors in the bones. This diagnosis led him down the path to find the best multiple myeloma specialist by getting a second opinion at a few cancer centers. He decided to entrust Jeffrey Zonder, M.D., malignant hematologist and leader of the Multiple Myeloma and Amyloidosis Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos. Brooks decided to participate in a clinical trial. Hear how his clinical trial was managed and why he said getting a second opinion was the best choice he made.
