Dublin Port Wins International Sustainability Award for Berth 53 Project

6 November 2026

Dublin Port has been named the winner of the Infrastructure category at the 2026 International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) Sustainability Awards, recognising the innovative and environmentally conscious design of its Berth 53 Project.

The award was announced on 5 November 2026 at a gala ceremony held during the IAPH World Ports Conference at the Natural History Museum in London, marking Dublin Port's first win at the prestigious international awards.

The IAPH Sustainability Awards recognise outstanding sustainability initiatives across the global port industry, celebrating projects that demonstrate innovation, environmental responsibility and long-term benefits for ports and the communities they serve.

This year's awards attracted 66 project submissions from ports around the world, with 18 projects shortlisted across six categories. Dublin Port's Berth 53 Project was selected as one of three Infrastructure category finalists before going on to win the overall award.

Recognising Sustainable Port Infrastructure

Part of Dublin Port's Masterplan 2040, the Berth 53 Project represents an important investment in the future capacity and resilience of Ireland's largest port, incorporating innovative engineering solutions designed to support port operations while protecting the surrounding marine environment.

A key feature of the project is its open-piled jetty design, developed to maintain natural tidal flows and minimise impacts on the neighbouring Tolka Estuary Special Protection Area.

The project also incorporates Ireland's first Auto Mooring System, designed to improve the safety and efficiency of vessel berthing operations while helping to reduce fuel consumption and associated emissions.

Berth 53 is being enabled for future Onshore Power Supply, allowing vessels to connect to the electrical grid while at berth, supporting the transition towards more sustainable maritime operations. Together, these features demonstrate Dublin Port's approach to integrating environmental considerations into the development of essential port infrastructure.

The Berth 52/53 Project is supported by funding through the European Union's Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) programme.

A Significant Achievement for Dublin Port

Winning the Infrastructure category places Dublin Port among leading international ports recognised for their commitment to sustainable development.

The award is particularly significant given the strength of this year's competition, with projects from across the world demonstrating the increasing importance of innovation and sustainability within the maritime sector.

For Dublin Port, the recognition highlights the work being undertaken to balance the need for modern, efficient port infrastructure with the protection of Dublin Bay's marine environment.

Thank You for Your Support

Following the announcement of Berth 53's shortlisting, Dublin Port invited colleagues, partners, stakeholders and the wider community to support the project through the IAPH public voting process. Dublin Port would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote and support the project. Public voting formed part of the overall judging process, alongside an independent assessment by an international jury of industry experts.

This award is an important recognition of the work and collaboration involved in delivering the Berth 53 Project and reinforces Dublin Port's commitment to developing sustainable, resilient infrastructure for the future.
