International correspondents appeared in more than 120 videos published by The Times last year, putting our reporting from around the world in front of vast new audiences. But there's more work to do in this medium, and we're excited to announce an important part of our strategy to embrace it: a hybrid text-and-video bureau in Brazil, anchored by two top-notch journalists who will help us explore how video can be a basic part of how we cover the world.
A 20-year Times journalist and filmmaker, Adam Ellick will be our new Brazil bureau chief in São Paulo. He brings deep experience in both foreign correspondence and video journalism to this new assignment. At various times in his long career, he co-led The Times's Video department, helped conceive the Visual Investigations team and co-produced a video on how an Afghan woman was burned to death that was featured in an entry recognized with a Pulitzer Prize in 2016. Adam is a former senior video correspondent with reporting experience from Iran to North Korea. In 2009, he met a then 10-year-old schoolgirl named Malala Yousafzai and brought her story to the world in a documentary called "Malala's Story." Adam was also a co-author of the 2014 Innovation Report, a cornerstone of our digital transformation.
Adam most recently started the Opinion Video team, which has won 11 Emmys and the company's first Academy Award. The team produced satire, collaborated with external video influencers, commissioned original reporting inside Covid I.C.U.s and Gaza, and exposed abuse at Nike that led to major changes in women's sports.
