President Gitanas Nausėda, together with President of Latvia Edgaras Rinkevičius, visited the Independence liquefied natural gas terminal in Klaipėda, one of the most important energy facilities in the Baltic region.

During the visit, the leaders of Lithuania and Latvia were briefed on the terminal's operations, its role in ensuring the supply of liquefied natural gas and energy security for the countries of the region, and discussed further cooperation between the Baltic States in strengthening the protection of strategic infrastructure.

The President of Lithuania stressed that the Klaipėda LNG terminal is a prime example of regional and transatlantic partnership and energy solidarity. "Latvia's decision to use the Klaipėda LNG terminal until 2044 confirms the strategic importance of this facility for the energy security of the entire Baltic region. Furthermore, imports of the U.S. are on the rise, reaching 70 percent of U.S. LNG imports in 2025. This demonstrates that, by acting together, we can build a reliable and resilient energy system," the President said.

According to the President, Russia's war against Ukraine and repeated incidents in the Baltic Sea have once again underscored the need to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure. The President noted that Lithuania's long-term efforts in this area are yielding results at the European Union level - the updated EU regulatory framework for energy networks creates opportunities to finance emergency repairs of cross-border energy interconnections and the acquisition of necessary reserves. Currently, 5 percent of the Connecting Europe Facility budget (approximately 1.3 billion euros) is earmarked for strengthening the protection and resilience of critical infrastructure.

The President also welcomed the progress made in implementing the project to protect synchronization infrastructure, carried out by the Baltic States' and Poland's energy transmission systems operators. The project is one of the region's most important initiatives for strengthening the energy security of the Baltic States. With more than 113 million euros in European Union funding, it will enhance the protection of critical energy infrastructure across the Baltic States, from counter-drone capabilities to underwater cable monitoring, electronic security systems, and strategic equipment reserves.

The President stressed that it is also necessary to accelerate other strategically important regional energy projects, including Harmony Link and the future electricity interconnection between the Baltic States and Germany, while also strengthening cooperation in clean energy.

It is symbolic that, the day after the Presidents of Lithuania and Latvia visited the Klaipėda LNG terminal, an LNG cargo destined for Latvia will arrive at the terminal. According to the President, this once again confirms that the Klaipėda terminal is not only a symbol of Lithuania's energy independence and security, but also that of the entire Baltic region.
