Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) is proud to announce that Thomas L. Truman, MD, is the recipient of The Capital Medical Society's prestigious 2026 Thomas L. Hicks, M.D. Outstanding Physician Award. This distinguished honor is awarded to physicians who demonstrate exceptional leadership, community service, clinical excellence and dedication to medical education. Dr. Truman's career reflects these values, making him a truly deserving recipient of this distinguished honor.
Dr. Truman has dedicated his career to advancing pediatric care. Serving as Medical Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital (TMH), Medical Director of the Pediatric Hospitalist Program at TMH, Corporate Medical Director of Pediatrix Medical Group of Florida, and Medical Director of Spark Pediatrics Medical Daycare, he has truly been a leader in enhancing pediatric healthcare in the Big Bend.

Beyond the hospital, Dr. Truman has remained deeply engaged in the community throughout his career. He has served as a Pediatric Consultant for the Law and Psychiatry Service at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, a member of the Child Protection Team at Massachusetts General Hospital, a contributing editor for The Quarterly Child Abuse Medical Update, and the Assistant Medical Director for the Child Protection Team in Tallahassee.
Dr. Truman earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of South Florida. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine, completed his residency at the University of South Florida, and then pursued a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care and Neonatal Intensive Care at Massachusetts General Hospital.
"I was both honored and humbled to receive this award. I am forever grateful for the dedicated nurse practitioners, Tiffany Truman and Charo Regala, whom I have been fortunate to work side by side with for over 20 years, as well as the many physicians, fantastic nurses, respiratory therapists, dietitians, case managers and other TMH colleagues who help hospitalized children. I am also thankful for the never-ending support of my family," said Dr. Truman.
Dr. Truman's career is a testament to the values honored by the Thomas L. Hicks, M.D. Outstanding Physician Award: leadership, innovation, mentorship and service to the community. As TMH and the greater medical community celebrate his accomplishments, his impact will continue to be felt by patients, colleagues and future physicians alike.
Congratulations, Dr. Truman, on this well-earned recognition.
