São Paulo, March 6, 2026 - After winning over audiences around the world and drawing 2.5 million moviegoers to theaters in Brazil, The Secret Agent , directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, enters a new chapter in its journey with its Netflix premiere in Brazil this Saturday, March 7 .
The feature won four awards at the Cannes Film Festival and two Golden Globes, in addition to receiving four Oscar nominations and two BAFTA nominations. Netflix is among the film's co-producers, having invested in the project from its earliest stages and secured an agreement to make it available exclusively to subscribers in Brazil. The film was produced by CinemaScópio, in co-production with France (MK2), Germany (One Two Films), the Netherlands (Lemming) and Netflix Brazil.
"After four months in Brazilian theaters, the film's launch on Netflix is an opportunity for our story to reach new audiences and to be revisited by many others who were deeply moved by it," says director Kleber Mendonça Filho. "It feels like The Secret Agent is coming to life all over again on new screens, now with extraordinary image and sound quality for home viewing."
For producer Emilie Lesclaux, the film's Netflix debut marks another step in the successful journey that began in theaters. "Our expectations are very high, and it is a privilege to see that the film tells such a powerful story that it has sparked audiences' interest in experiencing cinema in all its many forms, across every screen," she says.
In theaters across Brazil since November, the feature hasn't left the national box office Top 10 in four full months. Now, it's expanding its reach all while maintaining its presence on the big screen, as it becomes available to Netflix subscribers throughout Brazil. "Kleber Mendonça Filho has a highly distinctive and fearless creative vision. With The Secret Agent , he masterfully creates sophisticated, thought-provoking entertainment, and brings his vision of Recife to the world with tremendous personality. It is exactly the kind of story Netflix is proud to support and share with even more audiences," says Elisabetta Zenatti, Vice President of Content at Netflix Brazil.
Set in 1977, during Brazil's military dictatorship, The Secret Agent follows Marcelo (Wagner Moura), a technology expert and professor who leaves São Paulo for Recife in search of a fresh start and to escape a mysterious past. But upon arriving in the city at the height of Carnival, he finds that his new life may be far less safe than he imagined. Directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, the film features a standout cast that includes Maria Fernanda Cândido, Alice Carvalho, Gabriel Leone, Tânia Maria, Thomás Aquino and Udo Kier.
On Netflix, The Secret Agent will be available in a 4K Dolby Vision HDR (High Dynamic Range) master, specially prepared for the platform's streaming system. Dolby Vision delivers the highest image quality and resolution currently available. To enjoy the full experience, viewers need both an HDR-compatible subscription plan and an HDR-compatible display.
