Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) is proud to raise visibility and support for Feed the Hounds, an initiative to address food insecurity and promote regional sustainability and wellness across the ENMU and local community.
The initiative's goal is simple: to cultivate organic crops and distribute them at no cost to the ENMU and the local area.
Reinforcing National Ag Day's theme "Together We Grow," Feed the Hounds leverages the expertise of the ENMU Department of Agriculture to provide fresh, organic produce to students and regional food banks.
Feed the Hounds supports a sustainable cycle of wellness. Agriculture students cultivate fruits and vegetables, which are then prepared by the Department of Culinary Arts and served to children at the ENMU Child Development Center.
Through partnerships with regional rural schools, Feed the Hounds also enables agriculture students to engage directly with the local community and teach sustainable methods for growing their own food to elementary students across Roosevelt County.
Donations are urgently needed to sow seeds and cultivate the produce that feeds our community during the fall harvest.
Funds raised through this initiative will directly provide the seeds, soil, and tools necessary for sowing. Travel funds to deliver fresh food to local neighbors and rural partners will also be supported through the initiative, along with instructional materials for teachers and students participating in K-12 partnerships.
"This program is a great fit with ENMU and our region. Growing up on a farm and having a large garden to grow much of what we ate, I know well the importance of the lessons woven into this project," said Dr. James Johnston, ENMU chancellor. "I encourage all who are able, to take part in feeding the Hounds of our region."
Community members, alumni, and local businesses are encouraged to Feed the Hounds by visiting the Feed the Hounds webpage to give, share, and engage with the Feed the Hounds posts on our social media channels.
