Remarks by the Executive Secretary, Mr. Claver Gatete on the occasion of United Nations at 80 celebrations

Introductory Remarks by the Executive Secretary, Mr. Claver Gatete on the Occasion of United Nations at 80 Celebrations

Excellencies,

Members of the Diplomatic Corps,

Distinguished Guests:

It is an honour to welcome you to Africa Hall, the home of African multilateralism and the proud seat of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa for more than six decades.

It was here, in this very hall, that the Organization of African Unity was born - a moment that ignited Africa's journey toward freedom and unity, and whose spirit lives on today in the African Union and our shared pursuit of the Africa We Want under Agenda 2063.

And it is here, once again, that we have convened to commemorate a truly historic occasion which is the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations, under the theme: "Ethiopia and the United Nations: Past, Present and Future."

This celebration represents both a moment of reflection and of renewal: to honour the UN's enduring partnership with Ethiopia and Africa, and to recommit ourselves to the ideals of peace, solidarity and shared progress that unite us all.

In a special way, we commend the Government and people of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia for their steadfast partnership, gracious hospitality and firm commitment to the ideals of the United Nations.

Ethiopia's leadership and generosity, as host of the ECA and as a champion of multilateralism, continue to inspire our collective work for peace, development and unity across the continent.

I also wish to extend heartfelt appreciation to the international community, the diplomatic corps, colleagues across the UN family, and all of you here for your continued collaboration and support.

Together, we have advanced the UN's mission in Ethiopia and across Africa - from peacekeeping and humanitarian action to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Finally, I wish to pay tribute to the women and men of the United Nations - past and present - whose professionalism and dedication bring the Charter's vision to life every day.

As we celebrate this milestone, may we renew our collective resolve to build a more peaceful, just and sustainable world for us all and generations to come.

It is now my honour to deliver, on behalf of the Secretary-General, his message for this 80th United Nations Day.
