HDOT invites community members to open house for H-1 Cap Park studay at Keʻelikōlani Middle School

HONOLULU - The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) invites interested community members to an open house for the H-1 Cap Park Planning Study.

Highway cap parks are public parks that have been built above highways on top of highway caps. These parks represent an approach to mitigating negative impacts that highways can have on communities. Highway cap parks can be built during construction of a new highway, during reconstruction of an existing highway, or following completion of highway construction.

Highway caps are structures built over highways that include elements other than streets, namely parks or buildings. Often, highway caps can be very wide bridges or decks built over roadways and can vary in length from a few hundred feet to one or more city blocks.

The open house will be on September 29 in the Keʻelikōlani Middle School Cafeteria at 1302 Queen Emma Street, starting with a presentation from 5:30 p.m. and interactive, keiki-friendly activities from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Community members are encouraged to come and learn about the H-1 Cap Park Planning Study which was funded by a competitive grant from the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Reconnecting Communities Pilot. For more information on cap parks, see the link to the FHWA Report to Congress here.

HDOT's feasibility study will explore the possibility of building a cap park over a portion of the H-1 Freeway in the vicinity of Liliha Street and Pali Highway. The cap park concept is intended to reduce pollution, increase access to open spaces and embrace the context of a traditional Hawaiian ahupuaʻa.
