Ninety years ago, MECU was founded on a shared commitment to mutual support, ensuring members could access fair, trustworthy financial services to realize their dreams. As part of its 90 Days of Community initiative, which began in late August in honor of the credit union's milestone anniversary, MECU has combined charitable giving, employee volunteerism, and member-focused activities designed to support their members and neighborhoods.
Throughout September, MECU made charitable contributions to organizations including Marian House and the Baltimore Fire Officers Association. Employees also rallied around local students by collecting school supplies at the credit union's headquarters and nine branch locations. The donated supplies have been delivered to partner schools, helping ensure educators and students have the resources they need for a successful school year.
"Reaching 90 years is a tremendous milestone, but for us, the celebration isn't about just looking back," said John Hamilton, President and CEO of MECU. "It's about honoring the people and communities who have made these 90 years possible and looking ahead to how we can continue to make a difference. From helping members buy homes and cars, to supporting small businesses, to putting school supplies directly into the hands of students, our 90 Days of Community reflects what it means to be a Baltimore-based financial institution."
The anniversary celebration continued on Friday, October 2, as MECU marked its official 90th birthday with festivities at all nine branch locations. Members and community residents were invited to join the celebration with commemorative giveaways and other promotions honoring nine decades of service and partnership. The anniversary is also reflected in special product promotions created with members' financial wellbeing in mind. Throughout the celebration, MECU is offering CD promotions and other opportunities created to support members in building financial security.
The 90 Days of Community initiative will continue through November with additional charitable giving, member-focused activities, and employee volunteer activities. Together, these efforts represent a focused commitment to celebrating the past while investing in the future of Baltimore's communities.
