Jay Sears, a Master of Science in Respiratory Care student, has received two scholarships: the Dr. Craig Smallwood Research Scholarship and a merit scholarship from the American College of Respiratory Therapy Education.
The Dr. Craig Smallwood Research Scholarship is awarded to one student who is a member of the Coalition for Baccalaureate and Graduate Respiratory Therapy Education. The $2000 scholarship supports a student research project. Applicants must submit official transcripts verifying enrollment in a graduate respiratory therapy program, a professional resume, a research proposal and a letter of support from a faculty adviser.
Kristen McHenry, program director for the Master of Science in Respiratory Care, noted that Sears is currently researching mental health in undergraduate respiratory care students in the United States.
"With the support and guidance of his faculty advisors, [Clinical Associate Professors in the Department of Respiratory Care] Megan Koster and Camille Stover, we look forward to learning of his findings this summer as he completes the culminating capstone requirement in the program," McHenry said.
The American College of Respiratory Therapy Education presents a $1000 merit scholarship annually to eight student members based on academic achievement, service, research activities, and honors and awards.
"Jay has been a welcome addition to the master's program," McHenry said. "His dedication to continued professional development, educating the next generation of respiratory therapists, and service to his community are remarkable."
Sears, a father of two, said the financial support allows him to focus on the final phase of his graduate education while maintaining a work-life balance.
"I was overjoyed when I learned I had received both scholarships," Sears said. "By investing in respiratory therapists who are committed to advancing their education and leadership skills, we strengthen our profession. This support helps drive research and innovation, keeps us competitive, and ultimately advances respiratory medicine within the health care system."
With these scholarships, Sears is well-positioned to contribute to the future of the profession, balancing his roles as a scholar and a father while working to advance the quality of care for patients nationwide.
Boise State has three respiratory care programs: On Campus Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care Program, Registered Respiratory Therapy-Bachelor of Science Degree Advancement Online Program and Master of Science in Respiratory Care.
