Mayor John W. Ewing Jr. Street Renaming

A stretch of Lothrop Street where Omaha's 52nd mayor spent some of his formative years has been renamed for him. The Omaha City Council unanimously approved the ceremonial renaming for Mayor John W. Ewing Jr. on July 22. Now, a dedication ceremony will be held.

WHEN: 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 31

WHERE: 22nd and Lothrop Streets. (Section that was renamed runs from 22nd Street to 24th Street)

CEREMONY: The ceremony will feature Veta Jeffery, president of Jeffery Consultants, the Rev. Cedric Perkins, senior pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church, LaVonya Goodwin, Omaha City Councilwoman, Thomas Warren, chief of staff for Mayor Ewing, Roger Garcia, president of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, Preston Love, Jr., of the North Omaha Visitors Center, and Willie Barney, founder and CEO of the Empowerment Network. Mayor Ewing will provide remarks.

BACKGROUND: Mayor Ewing once lived at 2114 Lothrop, attended Lothrop Elementary School, and worshipped at Paradise Baptist Church at 2124 Lothrop. Ewing served on the Omaha Police Department (1982-2006), was elected Douglas County Treasurer, and served in that role for 18 1⁄2 years (2007-2025). He was elected mayor on May 13 and sworn in on June 9, both in 2025.
