April is Earth Month and a great time to get outside and support your mental and physical well-being. The University of New Mexico's Office of Sustainability will host a series of Earth Month events, offering students, faculty and staff opportunities to engage with sustainability efforts on campus.
As human connection to nature continues to decline, approximately 60% over the last 200 years, access to green space is more important than ever (Miles Richardson 2025).
The University of New Mexico Office of Sustainability is now accepting applications for the UNM Sustainability Corps, a service-learning program designed to provide students with hands-on experience in sustainability initiatives across campus.
The program offers students opportunities to build professional skills through peer outreach, event support, data collection and project implementation. Participants will gain experience working on campus-based sustainability efforts while receiving structured training.
Applications are available through the UNM Jobs page, with a best consideration date of Monday, April 27.
For the second consecutive year, UNM was recognized as a Tree Campus, and the Office of Sustainability is celebrating with tours and events all month long and is working to promote environmental wellness through the UNM Arboretum.
Events begin Wednesday, April 8 with the GPSA Green Workforce Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Building Atrium.
On Wednesday, April 22, the University will host an Earth Day North Campus Clean-Up from 9 to 11 a.m., with check-in at the North Campus Shade Structure. To participate, RSVP on the Sustainability website for this great team-building opportunity. The event is limited to 50 participants, and breakfast burritos, coffee and tea will be provided.
The 16th Annual Sustainability Expo will take place Thursday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Cornell Mall outside the Student Union Building in partnership with the Sustainability Studies Program. Later, a screening of Across Together: The Return Expedition will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the SUB Movie Theater. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and a question-and-answer session will follow the film.
Additional events include an Arbor Day Central Campus Clean-Up and tree planting on Friday, April 24 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Duck Pond, as well as the release of the UNM Arboretum Tour from noon to 1 p.m. To sign up for the Central Campus Clean-Up, register here.
From Friday-Monday, April 24 to 27, UNM will participate in the Albuquerque City Nature Challenge, a virtual event encouraging participants to document biodiversity across campus and the city using iNaturalist.
The month's programming will conclude with the Lobo Gardens Spring Garden Party on April 30 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., followed by Bike to UNM Day on May 6, which will include group rides and welcome stations across campus.
Organizers encourage the campus community to participate in the events and explore opportunities to support sustainability efforts at UNM.
