MORENO VALLEY, CA (March 25, 2026) -- The City of Moreno Valley has been monitoring the ongoing investigation into recent attacks on wild burros in the region, and is encouraging the community to report information directly to the appropriate agency to support a timely and effective response.
Since 2025, more than 20 undomesticated burros have been injured or mutilated. Many suffered from arrow wounds or severe trauma. Tragically, several of these animals required humane euthanasia due to the extent of their injuries. Recent incidents have occurred in unincorporated areas of Riverside County, though previous cases have been reported near Moreno Valley city limits.
"Protecting our community includes protecting the wildlife that is part of Moreno Valley's identity," said Mayor Ulises Cabrera. "These acts are deeply concerning, and it's critical that residents report any information directly to Riverside County Animal Services so it reaches the right team quickly and helps bring those responsible to justice."
The Riverside County Department of Animal Services is leading the investigation and is asking residents to report any sightings of injured burros or relevant information directly to their department at 951-358-7387. Officials emphasized that calling 9-1-1 for these situations may delay response times, as reports must ultimately be redirected to the appropriate agency. Calls made after hours are routed to an emergency line to ensure urgent situations are addressed.
The City's Animal Services team continues to collaborate with regional partners, sharing information and responding to calls within Moreno Valley's jurisdiction. The City will also reinforce public awareness through social media to ensure residents understand where - and how - to report incidents and improve coordination.
