In an ordinance passed earlier this year, the City Council voted to move its Legislative Session from Monday evenings to Wednesday evenings, effective July 15, 2026.
"While this may seem out of the ordinary, rescheduling our meetings to Wednesday evenings will improve community participation and avoid Monday meeting cancellations," said Council President Betsy Wilkerson. "This change will allow more time for council actions to be reflected in the agendas during the agenda review session. I know that change can be difficult for some, but I expect the new schedule will ultimately make council meetings much more efficient."
In Resolution 2024-0119, adopted on December 9, 2024, the City Council recognized the benefits of rescheduling regular council meetings. After gathering significant community input through surveys and stakeholder discussions, the Council concluded that holding the regular legislative session on Wednesday evenings would serve the best interests of city employees, council members and their staff, as well as the citizens of Spokane.
Historically, City Council held most meetings on Mondays, including its committee meeting, followed by agenda review (formerly known as "briefing sessions") and the legislative session in the evening. This schedule led to long days for councilmembers and staff and little time left to alert the public to changes to the council agenda arising from amendments, deferrals, or other actions taken at the afternoon agenda review session. In addition to moving the legislative session from Monday evening to Wednesday evening, the afternoon Agenda Review session is moved to Tuesday, giving the City Clerk's office an additional day to provide the public with updated agendas.
Starting next Tuesday, July 14, the Council Agenda Review Meeting will be held at 11 a.m. Council Committee meetings will be held each Tuesday at 1 p.m. Beginning Wednesday, July 15, the Council's legislative session will be held at its normal time of 6 p.m. Streaming for all meetings will remain available on CityCable5 and on the Council's Facebook page.
