New Online Tool Gives Residents an Easier Way to Buy Flood Insurance

11/4/2026

Tulsa's top flood protection rating helps policyholders save 45% on premiums

Tulsa homeowners, renters, and business owners now have another way to protect their property from flood damage. A new FEMA tool lets residents get a flood insurance quote and buy coverage directly from FloodSmart.gov.

The tool, launched October 20, offers coverage through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Residents can complete the process online or work with an insurance agent if they prefer.

For Tulsa residents, that coverage comes with significant savings. The City's Class 1 Rating, the highest available through FEMA's Community Rating System, gives NFIP policyholders a 45% discount on flood insurance policies.

Tulsa earned that rating through decades of work to reduce flooding, improve stormwater drainage, guide development in flood-prone areas, and help residents understand their risk.

Those efforts help protect the community, but flooding can still happen, including outside areas marked as high risk on flood maps. Heavy rain can overwhelm drainage systems and flood unexpected places. Most standard homeowners and renters' insurance policies do not cover flood damage.

The City encourages residents to take steps now to prepare:

  • Check your flood risk. Visit cityoftulsa.org/floodcontrol to review local floodplain maps and see whether your property is in or near a flood zone. Even properties outside mapped flood zones can flood.
  • Know what your insurance covers. Ask your insurance provider whether your current policy covers flood damage and what additional protection you may need.
  • Explore flood insurance options. Visit FloodSmart.gov to get a quote, compare coverage options, and learn about discounts.
  • Prepare before storms arrive. Follow weather forecasts and local alerts and know what you will do if flooding threatens your home or neighborhood.
