Treasurer Smith Recognizes National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Highlights IAble

State Treasurer Roby Smith is recognizing October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) by highlighting IAble and the opportunities available to working Iowans with disabilities to save for their futures.

"Every Iowan deserves the opportunity to work, build a career and save for today's and tomorrow's expenses," said Treasurer Smith. "National Disability Employment Awareness Month is a great time to recognize the contributions Iowans with disabilities make in workplaces across our state and make sure they know about resources like IAble that can help them keep more of what they earn."

IAble is Iowa's Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) savings plan. Eligible individuals can save and invest money for qualified disability expenses while maintaining eligibility for certain means-tested benefits. Qualified expenses can include housing, transportation, education, employment training and support, assistive technology, health care and other expenses that help improve an account owner's health, independence or quality of life.

For Iowans with disabilities who are working, IAble can be an especially valuable savings tool. Through ABLE to Work, eligible account owners who are employed may be able to contribute above the standard annual ABLE contribution limit, allowing them to save more of their earnings for future expenses.

"Employment is about more than a paycheck. It can provide independence, opportunity and the ability to plan for what comes next," Smith added. "IAble helps ensure Iowans with disabilities have a tool designed specifically to help them build financial security while pursuing those opportunities."

IAble continues to grow alongside the Iowans it serves. Today, more than 4,600 account owners have saved over $54 million through the Plan.

Beginning January 1, 2026, federal law expanded ABLE eligibility by increasing the disability onset age from 26 to 46. Individuals whose qualifying disability began before age 46 may now be eligible to open an IAble account, significantly expanding the number of Iowans who can benefit from the program.

Employers can also play a role by sharing IAble information with employees as a no-cost addition to their financial wellness and benefits resources. Employers interested in learning more about IAble and ways to share the program with their workforce can contact the Treasurer's Office.
