AECOM appointed lead design consultant for the New Richmond Bridge, Stage 2

SYDNEY (July 20, 2026) - AECOM, the trusted global infrastructure leader, today announced its appointment as the lead design consultant for Stage 2 of the New Richmond Bridge project, supporting Transport for New South Wales and the lead contractor, Fulton Hogan. The partnership will design and deliver a new, taller flood-resilient bridge over the Hawkesbury River at North Richmond, maintaining community connectivity during flooding events.

The new bridge will feature two lanes in each direction to support future population growth, and is intended to sit around 10 metres higher than the existing structure to better withstand flood events. The project will ease congestion in Richmond by creating a new bypass south of the town centre, and the existing bridge will be converted into a walking and cycling connection for active travel across the Hawkesbury River.

"We will preserve and celebrate the heritage character of the existing Richmond Bridge by repurposing it as a dedicated shared user path, removing vehicular traffic and creating a safe and attractive space for pedestrians and cyclists."

The bridge will also feature lookout and rest areas, allowing the community to enjoy river views while strengthening active transport connections to nearby Hannah Park. The New Richmond Bridge project will improve flood resilience, reduce congestion and crashes, enhance connectivity to Sydney's road network, and support long-term community and economic growth across the region.
