The States of Guernsey has now had the final weather forecast, and it has confirmed that Storm Goretti is going to be significant. On that basis, we want to confirm our advice to you that this evening and tonight, please stay indoors, ideally being safely indoors by 6pm when the weather will start to deteriorate.
We're expecting gusts of up to force 12, with short periods of consistent force 11, coming from the west, peaking between 9pm and midnight this evening. In conjunction with reasonably high tides, this also means a red tide and flood warning has been issued, particularly for the west coast.
All events and bookings taking place at States of Guernsey premises, including schools, this evening are being cancelled. We would strongly encourage all private groups to also cancel events they may have been planning. This will help reduce the number of people travelling on the roads and limit risk. Beau Sejour will be closing at 5:30pm this evening.
Several large retailers have confirmed that they intend to close early at 6pm, with Storm Goretti becoming more acute from that time onwards. Businesses are asked to take any possible steps that could help reduce the number of people travelling in the early evening.
Bin and recycling collections tonight have been cancelled. Please do not put bags out.
There will be a reduced bus schedule and we'd advise islanders to monitor Stage Coach channels for updates on timings.
Emergency services and public servants will be working throughout the night to help protect people and infrastructure. Staying at home helps them by reducing the risk of needing help, allowing teams to focus on recovery efforts.
It is likely a number of trees will be uprooted by the winds this evening. Please report any blocking public highways or causing damage by calling 01481 222 222 to speak to the teams in the Joint Emergency Services Control Centre.
Please call 999 only in an emergency.
