Statement on Restoring Federal Funding for the Gateway Program

Our statement from Carlo A. Scissura, Esq., President and CEO of the New York Building Congress calling for the restoration of federal funding for the Gateway Program:

"The Gateway Development Commission's announcement today of a possible pause on construction is a four-alarm fire that demands the immediate attention of an administration claiming to want to be the biggest builders this nation has ever seen. The Hudson Tunnel Project is the most urgent infrastructure project in the country, and federal funding must be restored to keep construction moving.

A pause would immediately put nearly 1,000 workers out of a job - a skilled union workforce told to go home - wasting more than $1 billion already invested and risking further failures in a 116-year-old tunnel that is already a leading cause of delays for hundreds of thousands of riders.

This project is fully approved, fully obligated, and well underway - on time and on budget. The work is happening, the workers are on site, and the entire region's economy depends on seeing it through. Infrastructure should never be seen as partisan or political. It's for everyone. Our federal leaders must understand this and need to act now to fully restore funding to this vital project."
