In the run-up to the Sixth Session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, we present five key facts about this event:
The Sixth Session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held at the Radisson Montevideo Victoria Plaza Hotel, on August 18-20, 2026. This event seeks to examine the effects of demographic change in the region and analyze the progress, challenges, good practices and current priorities related to implementing the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development.
Multiple actors will participate in the 2026 edition of the Regional Conference on Population and Development. Ministers, deputy ministers, undersecretaries and other government officials are expected to attend along with representatives of the United Nations system, regional organizations, development banks, parliaments, academia, the private sector and civil society.
The opening ceremony will take place on Tuesday, August 18 at 4 p.m. local time in Montevideo (GMT-3) and will be led by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC); Diene Keita, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA); Cristina Lustemberg, Minister of Public Health of Uruguay; and Yamandú Orsi, President of Uruguay (to be confirmed).
On Wednesday, August 19, at 9 a.m. local time in Uruguay (GMT-3), the Executive Secretary, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, and Simone Cecchini, Director of the Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Center (CELADE)-Population Division of ECLAC, will present the document Impacts of Demographic Change in Latin America and the Caribbean: Public Policy Challenges and Options, aimed at stimulating the session's debates.
Prior to the start of the meeting, on Monday, August 17, the First Regional Private Sector Forum will be held at the headquarters of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) in Montevideo, with the aim of accelerating implementation of the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development through private sector leadership, impact investment and public-private collaboration. On Tuesday, August 18 - just before the official inauguration - the civil society preparatory meeting will take place. In addition, at least 30 side events are scheduled to be held.
