Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), Ranking Member of the Senate Agriculture Committee's Subcommittee on Food and Nutrition, Specialty Crops, Organics, and Research, released the following statement after two separate federal judges issued rulings on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP):
"These court rulings make it clear that the Trump administration must follow the law and fund SNAP during the Republican shutdown - just as I have been calling on them to do. Millions of Americans - including one in every five New Mexicans - depend on SNAP to feed their families. This vital nutrition program cannot be allowed to run dry for the first time in history.
"The administration has both the authority and the resources to keep SNAP operating, yet it has chosen to withhold billions of dollars to inflict maximum pain on the American people. It's time for the Trump administration to follow the law and act immediately to ensure no American family goes hungry."
This week, Senator Luján led the entire Senate Democratic Caucus in introducing the Keep SNAP and WIC Funded Act of 2025, legislation that prevents the Trump administration from illegally withholding available funds for SNAP and WIC.
Last week, Senator Luján led dozens of Senate Democrats in pressing the USDA to immediately release billions in available funds to keep Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits flowing through November. During debate on the Republican Budget Betrayal, Senator Luján spearheaded efforts to reverse the bill's drastic cuts to food assistance.
