Hospital recognized for expanding early detection, education and equity in Southeast Queens
Dec 15, 2025
NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens has been designated a 2025 Center of Excellence (COE) in Lung Cancer Screening by GO2 for Lung Cancer, a national leader in lung cancer early detection, education and advocacy. This recognition affirms the hospital's commitment to high quality low dose CT screening, coordinated follow up, smoking cessation resources, and patient-centered care - all delivered with a clear focus on reducing disparities and improving outcomes for a patient population that historically becomes ill and dies from cancer earlier than others.
"As we mark 90 years of service, this Center of Excellence designation validates our long-standing priority to expand access to preventive care and early cancer detection right here in our community," said Neil Moore, MBA, MPA, MPH, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens. "Many of our patients face greater illness burden and barriers to information and services; by bringing best practice screening and education to Queens - and ensuring care is available close to home through the Queens Cancer Center - we can prevent late stage diagnoses and help people remain in their neighborhoods for treatment and recovery."
Queens Hospital intends to immediately leverage GO2's Global Knowledge Center - the comprehensive online education hub available to COE members - to close information gaps that contribute to poorer outcomes. Dr. Daniel Contractor, Chief of Radiology, adds that access to GO2 resources will strengthen both clinical practice and community outreach: "We will use the Global Knowledge Center's evidence based educational materials, clinician resources, and patient tools to raise awareness, improve shared decision making, and standardize follow up care. Those resources help us translate screening into earlier diagnoses and better survival for patients who need it most."
Dr. Dave Holson, Chief Medical Officer, emphasizes the clinical imperative: "Prioritizing screening and prevention is how we change the trajectory of lung cancer in our community. By combining multidisciplinary care, education and outreach, we aim to chip away at the outcome gaps that have long affected Southeast Queens."
The Queens Cancer Center provides a full continuum of oncology services - from prevention and screening to diagnosis, treatment and survivorship - so patients can receive expert care locally rather than travel outside the borough. The COE designation confirms that Queens Hospital meets rigorous standards aligned with national guidelines (including ACR and NCCN best practices) for screening program quality, communication, timely diagnostic follow-up, and integration of cessation supports.
Beyond clinical services, the hospital's Center of Excellence status opens channels for broader community impact, including access to GO2's patient education materials, downloadable brochures, and community outreach assets that NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens will adapt for culturally competent public education campaigns, social media, and partner outreach - all designed to reach people who otherwise lack access to information and resources and to help close gaps in outcomes.
