This week marks the one-year anniversary since Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina. We pause to remember the tragedy of that day-the fear and the unimaginable challenges our fellow citizens faced in their darkest hours. We also honor the unbreakable spirit of the Western North Carolina.
In mere hours, floodwaters rose to unprecedented levels. Homes and cars were swept away. Lives were lost. Making matters worse, many endured the disaster without power or cell service-suffering in silence.
Our state is no stranger to nature's destructive force. However, seeing such devastation strike our mountains was both jarring and heartbreaking.
Yet, in the worst of times, we witnessed the very best of humanity. Neighbors helping neighbors. Communities rallied together. Rescuers risked everything to save the stranded. In those moments, we were reminded of what binds us together: the ties of faith, family, and living out Mark 12:31 - "Love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these."
Today, our neighbors in Western North Carolina continue to rebuild. Despite the destruction, elections were carried out smoothly. Their resilience honors the lives lost and lights the path forward. We pray for continued healing and thank God for allowing us to once again see the beauty of our mountains-stronger and more united than ever.
