Rep. Robert Flournoy: Leading with Transparency and Accountability in House District 74

By State Representative Robert Flournoy (D-Hampton)

(373 words)

I write with a heavy heart, deep concern for our community and an unwavering commitment to truth, justice and public safety.

The recent death of a Mexican national while in custody at the Robert A. Deyton Detention Facility in Clayton County is a tragedy that demands serious reflection, transparency and accountability. A life was lost while under government supervision, and that reality alone requires our full attention, our compassion and our responsibility as leaders.

First, I want to be clear: the men and women of law enforcement who serve honorably every day in our communities deserve respect and support. The vast majority serve with integrity, professionalism and a genuine desire to protect life and maintain public safety. Accountability and support are not opposing values; they are complementary. A strong justice system depends on both.

At the same time, any loss of life in custody must be treated with the highest level of seriousness.

An investigation is necessary, but transparency is essential. Families deserve answers. Communities deserve clarity. Justice cannot exist without trust, and trust cannot exist without truth.

This moment is not about political ideology; it is about moral responsibility. It is about human dignity. It is about ensuring that every person, regardless of nationality or status, is treated with basic humanity while under government authority.

Our district believes in law and order, but we also believe in life, dignity and accountability. Those principles are not in conflict; they are the foundation of a just society.

As a public servant, I will continue to advocate for:

  • Full transparency in all investigations;
  • Accountability where wrongdoing exists;
  • Due process and human dignity for every person in custody;
  • Support for ethical and professional law enforcement;
  • Policies that protect both public safety and human life.

We must be a community that can hold institutions accountable while honoring those who serve with integrity. We must be a district that stands for justice without abandoning compassion. And, we must be a people who choose responsibility over silence.

My prayers are with the family of the deceased, with our community and with every public servant committed to serving honorably. We move forward not with division, but with resolve, committed to truth, justice and the value of every human life.

Representative Robert Flournoy, Jr. represents the citizens of District 74, which includes portions of Clayton and Henry counties. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2024 and currently serves on the Energy, Utilities & Telecommunications, State Planning & Community Affairs and State Properties committees.
