ReMA Engages with Automakers and Policymakers on Automotive Circularity, Electrification, and More

On Wednesday, May 27, Cheryl Coleman, ReMA's Senior Vice President of Advocacy, Safety, and Sustainability, and David Wagger, ReMA's Chief Scientist/Director of Environmental Management, connected with OEMs, federal agencies, and research institutions during a meeting and site tour hosted by Toyota Motor North America and the American Chemistry Council (ACC) at M&M Auto Parts in Fredericksburg, VA.

The meeting provided an important opportunity for ReMA to continue strengthening relationships with OEMs, federal agencies, and research institutions as discussions around automotive circularity, electrification, batteries, and future material recovery systems continue to evolve.

ReMA staff were joined by representatives from government, industry, and research organizations to discuss automotive plastics recovery, shredding challenges, and broader circularity issues associated with end-of-life vehicles (ELVs).

Wagger presented an overview of the automobile shredding process, and the role recyclers play in material recovery, while Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) shared ongoing work related to automobile shredder residue (ASR) challenges and plastics recovery. Representatives from the U.S. Department of State, Embassy of Japan, EPA Offices of Chemical Safety & Pollution Prevention (OCSPP) and Land & Emergency Management (OLEM), U.S. Department of Commerce, Alliance for Automotive Innovation, and Ford Motor Company were in attendance.

This conversation will continue as ReMA meets in Detroit next month for its quarterly Board and Committee meetings, register here.
