October is Substance Use and Misuse Prevention Month

Each October, communities across the country observe Substance Use and Misuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the dangers of substance misuse and to promote strategies that prevent the use and misuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. It's also a time to celebrate the tireless efforts of individuals and organizations working to keep our communities safe, healthy, and resilient.

Why Prevention Matters

Substance misuse can lead to addiction, serious health problems, and even death. Prevention saves lives. By focusing on education, support, and healthy choices especially among youth we can reduce the risk of substance use and build a foundation for lifelong wellness.

What's Happening in South Dakota

Stakeholders across South Dakota are participating in Substance Use and Misuse Prevention Month by hosting educational events, sharing resources on social media, partnering with schools and community organizations, and encouraging conversations about the importance of healthy choices.

How You Can Get Involved

Everyone has a role to play in prevention. Here are a few ways you can make a difference:

  • Attend or volunteer at local prevention events.
  • Share educational materials and messages on social media.
  • Talk to friends and family about the risks of substance misuse.
  • Promote healthy, substance-free activities in your community.
