PIERRE, S.D. -- South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announces the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), at the request of the Sioux Falls Police Department, is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred Tuesday, March 31, in Sioux Falls.
"DCI investigates all Officer Involved Shootings fairly in an unbiased manner," said Attorney General Jackley. "After all of the facts are gathered and reviewed, DCI will issue a final report."
Richard Paul Olson, Jr., 36, Sioux Falls, was wanted by federal authorities for violation of his federal probation for possession of a firearm by a felon. On Tuesday, March 31, members of the Sioux Falls Police Department's Violent Crime Unit located Olson, Jr. at a Sioux Falls gas station.
Olson Jr. exited a vehicle and later produced a weapon. Two officers fired their weapons. A weapon, believed to be in Olson, Jr.'s possession, was recovered at the scene. The suspect attempted to flee, but a police service dog was deployed and apprehended Olson Jr. He sustained injuries due to dog bites. No one was injured by gunfire.
In its investigation, DCI will process the crime scene, conduct a forensic examination of all collected evidence, interview those involved, and review all available video. DCI will issue a summary once the investigation is completed. The Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office and South Dakota Highway Patrol are assisting DCI. The Sioux Falls Police Department is cooperating in the investigation.
This is the second Officer Involved Shooting in South Dakota this year.
