It's a great day Palm Bay!
On April 23, Chief Spears led the men and women of the Palm Bay Police Department in the annual memorial and wreath-laying ceremony honoring Officers Grogan and Johnson. Nearly four decades later, their sacrifice continues to shape who we are as a city. Their courage reminds us of the true meaning of service, and we remain committed to carrying their legacy forward. We were especially honored to have members of Officer Grogan's family in attendance. From the beginning, that was my vision for Sacrifice Park, to create a place where families can come, reflect, and feel connected to the legacy of their loved ones. Moments like this remind us why that space matters so much to our community.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, an important reminder that taking care of our mental well-being is essential. Supporting one another, speaking openly, and seeking help when needed are all part of building a stronger, healthier community.
Throughout May, we also recognize Military Appreciation Month, honoring the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country. Their dedication and sacrifice protect the freedoms we value every day, and we are proud to stand in support of our service members, veterans, and their families.
We celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week from May 4 through May 8, recognizing the educators who play a vital role in shaping the future of our community. Their commitment to our students extends far beyond the classroom, and we are grateful for the impact they make each and every day.
As Mother's Day approaches on May 10th, we take a moment to recognize the incredible women who shape our lives in ways both big and small. Mothers are often the quiet strength behind our families, offering love, guidance, and support without ever asking for recognition. They show up in the everyday moments, in the sacrifices no one sees, and in the unconditional love that never wavers. This day is an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and truly appreciate all that they give. To every mother, and to those who step into that role, thank you for the lasting impact you make on our lives and in our community.
From May 10 to 16, we observe National Police Week, a time to honor the brave men and women of law enforcement who risk their lives each day to protect our communities. This is more than a week of recognition, it is a time of reflection and gratitude. We honor those who continue to serve our community with courage and integrity, and we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their loss is felt far beyond their departments, it is felt by an entire community that depends on their protection. We will never forget their service, and we will always stand in support of those who continue to answer the call.
On May 16, our community comes together to recognize Armed Forces Day and honor the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who commit their lives to service and sacrifice. This day is a meaningful opportunity to thank those who have worn the uniform, past and present, representing the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Their dedication and willingness to serve continue to protect our nation and uphold the freedoms we value every day.
As we celebrate graduation season, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Class of 2026. This milestone represents years of hard work, perseverance, and growth, and it marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Whether you are continuing your education, entering the workforce, or pursuing another path, know that your future is full of opportunity and promise. Palm Bay is proud of each and every one of you. We look forward to celebrating our graduates at Bayside High School on May 21, Heritage High School on May 22, and Palm Bay High School on May 23. Congratulations again, and best wishes for all that lies ahead.
As May 25 approaches, we pause with heavy hearts to observe Memorial Day - a sacred day of remembrance for the brave souls who laid down their lives for our freedom. This is not just a day of remembrance, it is a solemn reflection on the true cost of our freedom. These brave individuals made the ultimate sacrifice, leaving behind families, friends, and futures, so that we could live in safety and liberty. Their courage is not just part of our history, it is the foundation of the freedoms we enjoy today. We owe them more than gratitude. We owe them remembrance, respect, and a commitment to live in a way that honors their sacrifice.
Finally, I look forward to sharing this year's State of the City Address, which will be presented via video at the May 21 Regular Council Meeting at 5:30 PM. This annual update highlights the progress we've made and where we are headed as a community. After the 21st, the State of the City will be available to view at www.palmbayfl.gov/SOC or on the City of Palm Bay Mayor's Office Facebook page.
