As outlined in a recent message from Assistant Vice President Danielle Berish and Interim Provost Zeynep Hansen, updated federal ADA regulations stipulate that universities meet digital accessibility requirements by April 24, 2026. These changes significantly expand the previous federal accessibility requirements, impacting nearly all university units and functions. The revised regulations apply to all public-facing, student-facing and employee-facing content, whether provided directly by Boise State University or through a third party. Under the new regulations, web content is considered anything viewable via a web browser or a mobile app, including all digital course materials inside or outside of Canvas.
Meeting these new requirements requires a fundamental culture shift to proactively ensure that all digital content is accessible from the start. Over the coming months, employees are asked to familiarize themselves with digital accessibility guidelines and resources available through the university to ensure all web content, social media posts, email communication from the university, course content, and mobile applications are accessible.
While this may feel overwhelming, starting small by updating one document or learning how to use one new tool (like Grackle or Ally) can help. Every step taken ensures that everyone can access the university's digital materials and technologies.
You're not alone and resources are available.
