Gas demand by Power Plants was 14% higher in August 2025 compared with August 2024

Online ISSN: 2990-8299
CSO statistical release, 18 December 2025, 11am

Key Findings

  • Total gas demand in August 2025 was 9% higher compared with August 2024 (See Table 2B).

  • Gas demand by Power Plants, the largest energy users of networked gas representing 75% of total use in August 2025, saw a 14% increase in demand when compared with August 2024 (See Table 2B).

  • Gas demand by Non-Daily Metered customers, who are largely domestic users and small businesses, showed a reduction in gas consumption in August 2025, down 10% compared with August 2024 (See Table 2B).

  • Imports were 15% higher in August 2025 compared with August 2024. Indigenous Production was 16% lower in August 2025 compared with August 2024 (See Table 1B).

  • In the first eight months of 2025, Indigenous Gas Production was down 16% and Imports were up 3% compared with the same period in 2024 (See Table A).

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (18 December 2025) published Networked Gas Daily Supply and Demand August 2025.

Commenting on the release, Dympna Corry, Statistician in the Climate and Energy Division, said: "Total gas demand in August 2025 was 9% higher compared with August 2024 (See Table 2B).

Power Plants, which are the largest consumers of networked gas, showed a 14% increase in consumption in August 2025 compared with August 2024 (See Table 2B).

Gas demand by Non-Daily Metered customers, who are largely domestic users and small businesses, showed a reduction in gas consumption in August 2025, which was down 10% compared with August 2024 (See Table 2A).

In August 2025, Power Plants accounted for 75% of total gas demand, while Large Daily Metered customers represented 13% of total gas demand (See Table 2A).

Imports were 15% higher in August 2025 compared with August 2024. Indigenous Production was 16% lower in August 2025 compared with August 2024 (See Table 1B).

In the first eight months of 2025, Indigenous Gas Production was down 16% and Imports were up 3% compared with the same period in 2024 (See Table A).

During the first eight months of 2025, gas demand by Non-Daily Metered customers, who are largely domestic users and small businesses, was 8% lower compared with the same period in 2024, whereas gas demand by Power Plants was 3% higher compared with the same period in 2024 (See Table A)."

Editor's Note

We have added monthly and annual PxStat Tables to this release. See Data page for the full list of PxStat tables.

Note that in Ireland, the Gas Day begins at 5am. Gas customer types are categorisedbased on their annual consumption. Power Plants are a subset of Large Daily Metered but for the purposes of this release we report Power Plants demand separately. In this release Large Daily Metered excludes Power Plants. See the Background Notes for the full definition of gas customer types.

Indigenous Gas Production was 15.8% lower in the first eight months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024

In the first eight months of 2025, Imports were 3.5% higher and Indigenous Production was down 15.8% compared with the same period in 2024. Gas demand by Power Plants was 7.7% higher when comparing the 12-month rolling period of September 2024-August 2025 with September 2023-August 2024 (See Table A).

Daily Gas Supply and Demand Trends August 2025

In August 2025, gas demand by Power Plants was 14% higher compared with August 2024. The lowest day of daily gas demand by Power Plants in August 2025 occurred on 08 August. On days where there is more wind available, a smaller proportion of electricity is generated by power plants (See Figure 3 and Table 2B).

Annual Gas Supply and Demand Trends 2018-2024

Comparing the year 2024 with 2023, networked gas demand was higher for each of the four customer types: Non-Daily Metered customers (+5%), Daily Metered customers (+5%), Large Daily Metered customers (+0.5%), and Power Plants (+2%) (See Table 3B).
