The Municipal Clerk's Office reminds the public that deadline to register short-term rentals is July 30, 2026. Registration can be completed at: www.muni.org/str.

Beginning July 31, 2026, all short-term rentals operating in the Municipality are required to display their STR Registration Number on all listings and advertisements, regardless of platform. Since registration opened on May 1, more than 1,100 owners have registered over 2,100 short-term rental units.

On July 21, 2026, the Assembly adopted AR 2026-213, As Amended encouraging the agencies responsible for enforcement to focus on achieving compliance with the registration requirement before imposing fines. Under the resolution, through September 30, 2026, owners or operators who receive a notice of violation should be provided up to 30 days to register before fines are imposed. The registration requirement has not changed. Owners and operators who have not yet registered should complete their registration now rather than wait to receive a notice of violation.

Short-term rentals currently in operation (including previously permitted bed & breakfasts) can be registered using the free, online application portal. The registration form requires the following information to complete:
  • The street address of the short-term rental
  • The type of living unit (i.e. a bedroom, house, townhouse, duplex, or condo)
    • Whether or not the owner resides on the STR property
    • Whether or not the STR is available seasonally or year-round
    • Whether or not the STR has been rented out on a long-term basis (meaning a rental of 30 days or more to the same person or people) in the past year
  • The name(s) of the owner(s)
  • The name and phone number of a local point-of-contact responsible for the short-term rental
  • An affirmation that the information and statement provided in the application are true, correct and complete
Upon approval, short-term rental owners will be assigned a municipal "STR" number unique to the unit in the form of a registration certificate issued via email. Beginning July 31, 2026, short term rentals will not be legally allowed to post listings or advertisements on any platform without the associated municipal STR number.

Approved by the Anchorage Assembly in December 2025, AO 2025-115(S-2) requires short-term rental listings and advertisements to include a municipal registration number, regardless of platform. A short-term rental is defined in municipal code as a furnished dwelling unit that is rented out for compensation on a temporary basis to a single person or group for fewer than 30 consecutive days.
