"We speak for the trees," said City of Chula Vista Ranger Program Manager Sam Alzubaidi, quoting the beloved children's book The Lorax. This year, the City is turning those words into action by launching a comprehensive inventory of the estimated 130,000 trees that line Chula Vista's neighborhoods, parks and streets.
The Chula Vista City Council approved an agreement with ArborPro, Inc. to conduct the Citywide Tree Inventory and develop an Urban Forest Management Plan. The two-year agreement, valued at an amount not to exceed $874,030 and supported by federal grant funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, covers fieldwork that is expected to be completed within 18 months.
Trees are more than just part of the scenery; they are essential to building a healthy and vibrant community. They help conserve energy, improve air and water quality, provide wildlife habitat, reduce the urban heat island effect, beautify neighborhoods, and support the overall well-being of residents. This new initiative will give the City valuable data to better care for its urban forest and ensure it thrives for generations to come.
The City's commitment to environmental stewardship continues with a festive Arbor Day celebration, inviting the community to roll up their sleeves and plant the seeds of a greener future. Arbor Day, first celebrated in Nebraska in 1872 by founder J. Sterling Morton, has grown into a nationwide tradition honoring the importance of trees. As a proud Tree City USA, Chula Vista will partner with San Diego Gas & Electric and Tree San Diego to host a community tree planting event where residents of all ages can participate and plant 100 trees.
Join the City of Chula Vista for the Arbor Day Celebration and Tree Planting Ceremony on Friday, April 24, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Montevalle Park & Recreation Center, located at 840 Duncan Ranch Road, Chula Vista, CA 91914. The free event will feature participation from the Mayor, City Council Members, City staff, and dedicated Tree San Diego volunteers.
The City of Chula Vista remains committed to protecting its natural resources and fostering a sustainable, resilient community. Through initiatives like the citywide tree inventory and community planting events, Chula Vista continues to invest in a greener and healthier future for all.
