New mobile app to prevent infant deaths in the Wiregrass goes live

An Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) Infant Safety App called Wiregrass Infant Net for Safety (W.I.N.S.) just went live. The downloadable app gives caregivers the tools and knowledge they need to protect their children and aims to avoid preventable deaths.

App features include the following:

• Back seat alerts that detect when a vehicle stops and, after 5 minutes, prompt the driver to check the back seat to prevent hot car deaths.
• Educational, safe-sleep games that are aimed at preventing SIDS/SUID deaths.
• Vaccine reminders are sent to stay on track with timely vaccinations. These are based on the child's date of birth and milestone reminders and provide resources if the child is falling behind.
• Alerts for weather and infant product recalls, tips, information on infant products that are not recommended, videos about infant CPR and infant choking, and soothing white noise features.

Crystalee Walters, Maternal Child Health Coordinator for the ADPH Southeastern District, said, "Alabama has sadly seen two hot car deaths already this year. We are excited to have this new app that also has district, county, state, and national resources to connect Alabama families with trusted support."

In this pilot project of the Southeastern Public Health District, residents of Barbour, Butler, Coffee, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston, and Pike counties may download the free app. The W.I.N.S. app is available on the App Store and Google Play.
