Local orthopedic care expands with two more surgeons serving Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Oct. 14, 2026 - Local residents in need of orthopedic care now have increased access as two new surgeons are serving Huntington-area patients on the campus of Parkview Huntington Hospital. Sports medicine surgeon Daniel Andersen, DO, and orthopedic surgeon Jason Ummel, DO, are seeing patients at the Parkview Physicians Group - Orthopedics office, Suite 210, in the medical office building at 2003 Stults Road.

These experienced specialists can treat a wide range of musculoskeletal issues and injuries.

"We are fortunate to have a team of such gifted physicians providing highly specialized care close to home for Huntington County residents," said Deb Potempa, market president, Parkview Health South. "Patients with all kinds of orthopedic concerns can feel confident in the considerable skills and experience of this team."

Daniel Andersen, DO

Dr. Andersen, an Ortho Northeast (ONE) physician, focuses on sports medicine, specializing in knee and shoulder arthroscopy, cartilage restoration and shoulder arthroplasty.

Andersen received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Marian University, Indianapolis, and completed his residency at Michigan State University/McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mt. Clemens. He pursued additional fellowship training in arthroscopic and sports medicine surgery at the University of Massachusetts. He earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Indiana University, Bloomington.

Andersen is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine.

A Fort Wayne native who grew up in Greenwood, Indiana, Andersen says he finds great satisfaction in helping athletes of all ages and abilities pursue their goals and stay active. In addition to his work with patients, he has provided care as a team physician for a professional baseball team and various high school and collegiate teams.

Away from work, Andersen enjoys having adventures with his wife and three children, such as visiting Acadia, Arches and other U.S. National Parks. He can often be found spending time outdoors and participating in or watching all kinds of sports.

Dr. Andersen sees patients in Huntington every other Thursday. Surgeries are scheduled from 7 a.m. to noon, and he has clinic hours from 1 to 4 p.m. He also practices at PPG - Orthopedics at 1316 E. Seventh St. in Auburn, Indiana.

Jason Ummel, DO

Dr. Ummel has been caring for patients in the Wabash area since 2022. He now splits his time between Wabash and Huntington.

Ummel has a particular interest in total joint replacement, including knee, shoulder and minimally invasive hip replacement, as well as fracture surgery and all aspects of sports medicine. He finds the difference he can make in the lives of others with his surgical skills to be very gratifying.

"Orthopedic surgery allows me to have an immediate positive impact on my patients' quality of life," he said. "Giving someone the ability to walk without pain, or to return to the activities they enjoy, is a privilege."

Ummel completed his residency in orthopedic surgery through California's Valley Consortium for Medical Education, training at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, Valley Children's Hospital in Madera, and San Joaquin General Hospital in Stockton, all in California. He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Downers Grove, Illinois.

Ummel pursued his undergraduate studies at Indiana University, earning a bachelor's degree in neuroscience.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics.

Ummel is proud of his north-central Indiana roots, having grown up in Warsaw. He and his wife returned to the area a few years ago to be near family and enjoy life in the Wabash area with their five children. He is pleased to be able to help patients in the Huntington area now in addition to Wabash.

Dr. Ummel sees patients in Huntington on Mondays and Fridays. He also sees patients at the PPG - Orthopedics office in the new Parkview Wabash Hospital MOB West, 1700 Alber St., just west of the hospital campus in Wabash.
