Washington, D.C. - As a part of the Republican-led government shutdown, the Department of Energy announced it will cut funding for more than 300 energy projects, worth approximately $7.5 billion. The specifics of the projects getting slashed have not been released. Prior to the DOE announcement, Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought posted on social mediathat "Nearly $8 billion in Green New Scam funding to fuel the Left's climate agenda is being cancelled." The post also specified that DOE would only cancel projects in Democratic-led states.
Renewable energy remains the cheapestform of energy compared to coal and fossil fuels, and states with the most renewable energy have seen the slower increasein energy costs. Rather than investing in more renewable energy to lower staggeringly-high energy costs, the Trump administration has issued a string of actions to boost the coal industry.
In response, Sierra Club Climate Policy Director Patrick Drupp issued the following response:
"By cancelling more renewable energy projects, Donald Trump is directly raising energy bills for millions of Americans. These projects are stable, well-paying jobs, and crucial cost-savings for families. While families are already struggling with the high cost-of-living across the country, the administration is focused on playing political games and holding common sense projects hostage, leaving everyday Americans out to dry."
