SKOWHEGAN, ME - Today, U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered remarks at a groundbreaking ceremony for the New Balance Foundation Boardwalk in Skowhegan. Dozens were in attendance for the event, including members of Main Street Skowhegan and the New Balance Foundation, Senator Angus King, state and local leaders, and members of the Skowhegan community.

The future boardwalk will run along the bank of the Kennebec River in downtown Skowhegan and connect to the existing footbridge, creating a riverfront promenade, public seating, and a paved ADA-compliant walkway. The second phase of this project, which is set to begin construction next year, will add more than 7,200 square feet of riverfront infrastructure and continue the boardwalk past the footbridge.

"It is fitting that the theme of Skowhegan's revitalization effort is, 'Go Big or Go Home.' This celebration is, above all, the result of a big community spirit," said Senator Collins during her remarks. "It is about a partnership forged by businesses, organizations, and citizens, led by Main Street Skowhegan, joining together to help make this riverfront an economic, cultural, and recreational asset. I am proud to be among your partners, and I am confident that this investment will produce a handsome return in quality of life."

In 2022, Senator Collins secured $2 million to support this project through her role on the Senate Appropriations Committee. In addition to this project, over the past five years, Senator Collins has secured more than $7 million for community development projects in Skowhegan. This includes $3 million for the town to construct a multi-use community center complex; nearly $2 million to construct an early childhood center at the Margaret Chase Smith Community School; and $475,000 to construct a facility to support maintenance of Maine's 267-mile portion of the Appalachian Trail.
