The Fred Korematsu Story: The Courage to Stand Up for What is Right

The October Lens Series, in partnership with the Iowa City Senior Center, will host Dr. Karen Korematsu, who will share her father's legacy and his pursuit for equal rights. About the program
Fred Korematsu was an American civil rights hero who bravely refused to report to a Japanese American incarceration camp during World War II. His defiant stand against Executive Order 9066 led to a historic Supreme Court case and eventual legal vindication, serving as an enduring reminder to stand up for justice. Korematsu's courage and activism were recognized when he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton in 1998. Fred T. Korematsu is the first Asian American honored by a state for a day in his name.

About the presenter
Dr. Karen Korematsu is the Founder and President of the Fred T. Korematsu Institute and the daughter of the late civil rights icon, Fred Korematsu. Karen Korematsu is a national speaker and travels the country advocating for civil liberties, social justice, civics, and ethnic studies education. She promotes Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution on January 30 in perpetuity for all 50 states. Karen Korematsu has signed on to several amicus briefs opposing violations of constitutional rights.
