WASHINGTON (March 25, 2026) - National Sorghum Producers joined more than 20 agricultural and biofuel organizations in sending a letter todayto the U.S. Department of the Treasury, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Energy and the Office of Management and Budget urging clear and timely guidance for implementation of the 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit.
The groups emphasized that farmers are facing a difficult economic environment and that 45Z represents a critical opportunity to strengthen demand for American-grown feedstocks and expand biofuel markets.
"Farmers are facing structural economic challenges, and biofuels remain one of the most important markets for sorghum," said NSP Chair Amy France, a farmer from Scott City, Kan. "Clear 45Z guidance will help ensure farmers can participate in these new markets and benefit from the conservation practices they are already implementing."
The 45Z tax credit is designed to support the production of low-carbon fuels, including sustainable aviation fuel, while increasing demand for U.S. agricultural commodities. As the rulemaking process moves forward, the coalition is calling on agencies to ensure farmers have a seat at the table and that on-farm practices are recognized in determining carbon intensity.
The letter also notes that conservation practices such as cover crops and reduced tillage can improve soil health and resilience but require upfront investment and management changes, making clear and predictable policy essential for adoption.
"Getting this right will provide the certainty farmers and lenders need to invest, innovate and remain competitive," France said.
The letter was signed by a broad coalition of national and state agricultural organizations and biofuel stakeholders.
