Call to Artists: Beyond the Canvas

Beyond The Canvas is a three-dimensional exhibition with the goal of showcasing a wide range of relief and sculptural artwork.

This exhibition is open to artists to showcase three-dimensional artwork such asrelief and sculpture. Considered types of mediums for this exhibit are as follows: porcelain, clay, stoneware, plaster, wood, metal, glass, papier-mache, cardboard, recycled materials, and fiber artwork. The exhibit will be open at the Arts Barn from March 30 to June 15, 2026. Wall artwork must comply with the current hanging system by way of framing or mounting in a way that is structurally sound with a wire installed across the back of the artwork. All artwork must be less than sixty (60) inches in any dimension and weigh less than fifty (50) pounds. Smaller standing sculptures will be displayed on pedestals. This application is open to artists who reside in the DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia).

The final artist selection will be processed using the following criteria:

  • Quality of work
  • Range of prices accessible to the public
  • Consideration of a variety of media

ELIGIBILITY

The call is open to all artists in the DMV area. Artists who have not participated in past Arts Barn events or other City of Gaithersburg programming are encouraged to apply.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • There is a $35 non-refundable application fee to apply to all gallery exhibitions. This fee must be paid before completing this application.If the $35 fee is not paid, the artist will not be considered for this exhibition. Space is limited and not all applicants may be accepted as artists.

  • Only applications with a RecXpress receipt number will be considered.
  • Accepted artists must sign a contract from the City of Gaithersburg for the 2026 Fiscal Year stipulating a split of 70% to the artist and 30% to the City for any of the artwork sold during the exhibition.
  • All artwork must be original and created by the artist. Artwork created through Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not permitted.
  • The City of Gaithersburg is not responsible for damage or loss for any items on facility premises. Artist should insure or self-insure their work and equipment.
  • All selected artists will need to provide a W-9 and fill out the City of Gaithersburg New Vendor Form when any artwork is sold in order to be paid.

MARKETING

The City of Gaithersburg will promote the exhibition on the City website and Arts Barn social media. Participating artists are urged to advertise on their respective websites, social media, and email to broaden the audience reach.
