DMV Service Changes Start August 3

Published on July 14, 2026

All DMVs will be closed Wednesday, July 15 for staff development and training; Online and kiosk services remain open

Denver - Denver Motor Vehicle today announced that the "rolling closures" of DMV locations will come to an end on Monday, August 3. The DMV had previously deployed the rolling closure model, where branches closed for one week, every four weeks, on a rotating basis, in order to help maintain service in all corners of the city during a period of slowed city hiring and economic uncertainty.

Starting Monday, August 3, all DMV locations will reopen to customers - with no weekly closures - as new hires who are completing training now begin moving into branches.

In conjunction with this change, the Tremont DMV located in the Elbra M Wedgeworth Municipal Building at 2855 Tremont Place will transition to a Commercial Vehicle Dealer and Fleet Center, serving only vehicle dealers and commercial fleet customers. These customers often bring multiple transactions for processing at a time, creating longer wait times for other non-commercial customers. All fleet and dealership customers will be required to use the Tremont DMV starting August 3. By queuing only commercial customers on their own, the city will also be able to reorganize its staff across the four quadrant DMV locations, allowing the city to end the rolling closures and better serve residents across all locations.

"These changes are designed to improve customer service and better support staff across all of the city's DMV locations," said Sophia Hassman, city treasurer and interim DMV director. "We've heard from staff and customers alike how difficult the rolling closures have been, and we are very excited to now be in a position to create more stability and consistency in the customer and staff experience at each branch."

Online Services Still Remain the Most Convenient for Customers

As a reminder, most DMV transactions can be completed online.

This week, the Denver DMV also refreshed its webpage to provide better direction to customers on how to access online services through the State of Colorado's myDMV website or at kiosks around the metro area. For most people, their DMV service can be completed online in under 15 minutes - from registering a new car to renewing their registration, applying for a disability placard, changing their address, and much more. Visit denvergov.org/DMV or mydmv.colorado.gov to explore all services available online - with no line.

On Wednesday, July 15, DMV branches in Denver will temporarily close for the day for staff development and training. The DMV will use this time to prepare for the reorganization starting August 3. Staff will also continue to process mail, kiosk, and online transactions.

Please note: In Colorado, county DMVs do not issue driver's licenses, permits, or IDs. These services are managed by the State of Colorado, not the City and County of Denver.
