First-of-its-kind procedure in the NYC Health + Hospitals system provides eligible patients with a new, minimally invasive breast cancer treatment option

NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County has successfully performed its first breast tumor cryoablation procedure, marking a significant milestone in advancing breast cancer care through an innovative, minimally invasive treatment option for eligible patients with early-stage breast cancer. As the first hospital in the NYC Health + Hospitals system to offer the procedure, Kings County Hospital continues its commitment to patient-centered care by providing additional options that prioritize both clinical excellence and quality of life.

Unlike conventional breast surgery, cryoablation is performed through a small incision under local anesthesia and is typically completed as an outpatient procedure. Most patients are able to return home the same day and may experience less discomfort, minimal scarring, faster recovery, and excellent cosmetic outcomes while receiving effective treatment for eligible tumors.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Jaime Alberty, who is currently the only surgeon in New York City performing breast tumor cryoablation. Using the FDA-authorized ProSense Cryoablation System, cryoablation destroys cancerous tissue by freezing the tumor. During the procedure, a small probe is inserted directly into the tumor under imaging guidance. The extreme cold forms an "ice ball" around the tumor, destroying cancer cells while preserving surrounding healthy tissue.
