BOZEMAN - Youth from across Montana are invited to participate in a livestock judging camp on May 28-30 in Red Lodge.
The camp, Intermountain & Beyond the Beartooth's Livestock Judging Camp, offers individuals ages 8 to 18 an opportunity to build knowledge and practical skills in livestock judging through hands-on instruction across multiple livestock species. The camp is hosted by Montana 4-H in Carbon County. Montana 4-H is a program of Montana State University Extension.
Participants will gain experience evaluating structure, balance, muscling, movement and overall quality while learning judging strategies from collegiate-level coaches, including Abby Johnson, Auburn University livestock judging coach, and Sierra Meyers from Linn-Benton Community College.
Participants will be encouraged to practice critical thinking, decision making and communication through oral reasoning and class discussions. They will also build confidence in livestock evaluation and improve their ability to analyze information quickly and accurately.
"Whether you are brand new to livestock judging or looking to sharpen advanced skills, this camp offers valuable opportunities for every experience level to learn, compete, network and grow in a supportive, hands-on environment," said Amber Elliot, MSU Extension agent in Carbon County and one of the event co-hosts. "For many youth, livestock judging camp is a helpful step toward success in 4-H, FFA and collegiate judging programs."
Registration is $100 for youth participants and $150 for adults and is open until May 15. For more information and to register online, visit https://4h.zsuite.org/external-event-registration/47206.
