The ICANN Board recognizes Glaser's significant efforts in capacity building on a local, regional, and global scale. His contributions include helping establish and lead the Brazilian School of Internet Governance and playing a key role in the creation of Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC). The ICANN Board expressed its deep appreciation for these contributions.

Glaser participated in the award ceremony remotely and thanked the ICANN Board for the recognition. A recording of the award presentation will be made available on the ICANN website.

Hartmut Glaser began his career as a professor at the University of São Paulo. He went on to become one of the pioneers of the Internet in Brazil, helping to build the infrastructure and services that supported the growth of the .br domain. Glaser played an important role in the development of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br) and the Brazilian Network Information Centre (NIC.br).

Glaser was instrumental in the creation of the Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC) and served on its Board of Directors from 2000 to 2015. He represented the region on the Address Supporting Organization Address Council for many years, served on the ICANN Nominating Committee, and contributed to the IANA Stewardship Transition as a member of the IANA Stewardship Transition Coordination Group. Glaser played a leading role in establishing the Brazilian School of Internet Governance, which has trained more than 800 individuals from government, civil society, academia, industry, and the technical community.

The Dr. Tarek Kamel Award for Capacity Building was established in honor of the late Dr. Tarek Kamel, an Internet pioneer known for his contributions to global Internet governance. The award recognizes members of the ICANN community who have made significant contributions to national, regional, or global capacity-development programs related to ICANN's mission.

About ICANN

ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address - a name or a number - into your computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
