NEA President: “Voters were very clear. We care about our kids… our communities… our country!”

WASHINGTON - National Education Association President Becky Pringle released the following statement reacting to the pro-public school wins across the nation in yesterday's elections:

"Yesterday, millions of Americans made their voices heard - standing up for the strong public schools our students deserve and against attacks on our democracy.

"For months, Donald Trump and Linda McMahon aimed their wrecking ball at public schools and our students' futures, pushing policies that are swelling class sizes, cutting supports for our students with disabilities, taking away food from hungry kids by cutting critical programs such as SNAP, and diverting resources from public school students to unaccountable and discriminatory private schools through vouchers.

"Voters said loud and clear: 'Enough!'

"In Virginia and New Jersey, voters elected public school champions - Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill - leaders who each have proven track records of partnering with educators and parents to deliver for our students while always putting working families above billionaires. Both have stood up for the retirement security of educators, firefighters, and other public servants - with Governor-elect Spanberger successfully leading the effort to pass the Social Security Fairness Act.

"In California, voters stood up to Trump's efforts to rig our democracy. Educators helped lead the way in stopping Trump's power grab - pushing back against what's happening in Texas, Ohio, and beyond.

"In my home state of Pennsylvania, voters retained three Supreme Court justices who have protected our freedoms, including voting rights, and contributed to landmark rulings in support of public schools and our students.

"In 27 states, voters elected strong public school candidates in thousands of school board races across the country, bringing new leaders committed to making sure every student has the support they need to succeed.

"From gun safety to providing meals for students and families, American voters were very clear. We care about our kids. We care about our communities. We care about our country!"
