FEMA Makes $17 Million Available for Pre-Disaster Mitigation for Flood Resilience Projects in New England

BOSTON - Today, FEMA announced that over $17 million in federal funding for hazard mitigation projects is available to New England states to address flood risks. This funding will empower states to take decisive, proactive steps to protect their communities from future disasters.

Congress authorized these 16 named projects through the Fiscal Year 2026 Homeland Security and Further Additional Continuing Appropriations Act. Funding for these projects has been made available through FEMA's Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant program. Nationwide, 40 states and one Tribal Nation are expected to receive more than $189 million in federal funding for 125 projects.

In FEMA Region 1 identified projects include:

Connecticut

  • $300,000 to the Town of Southington for the Plantsville Center Flooding Study
  • $2.4 million to the City of West Haven for the Savin Rock Beach Reinforcement

Maine

  • $1.1 million to the Town of Southport for the Hendricks Head Infrastructure Improvements
  • $2.9 million to the Town of Surry for the Newbury Neck Peninsula Storm Evacuation
  • $1.7 million to the York County Emergency Management Agency Flood Protection

Massachusetts

  • $1.1 million to the Town of Hull for the Harborview Road Coastal Resiliency and Shoreline Protection
  • $1.1 million to the Town of Scituate for the Cedar Point Seawall

New Hampshire

  • $1.2 million to the City of Hampton Department of Emergency Management for the Coastal Resiliency Storm Water Inflow/Infiltration Reduction Project

Rhode Island

  • $475,000 to the Town of Barrington for the Police Cove Park Seawall Repair
  • $900,000 to the Town of Bristol for the Independence Park Seawall Restoration
  • $660,000 to the Town of Bristol for the Bristol Seawall Repair
  • $345,000 to the Town of Burrillville for the Wallum Lake Dam Spillway Improvements
  • $825,000 to the City of Providence for the West River Flood Response Initiative

Vermont

  • $591,000 to the City of Barre for the Gunners Brook Floodplain Restoration and Debris Catcher Reconfiguration
  • $70,000 to the Town of Hardwick for 303a Flood Recovery & Resilience Plan
  • $1.4 million to the City of Montpelier for the Elm Street Housing Elevation

Before funds are awarded, these communities must submit an application by July 22, 2026 by 5 p.m. Eastern Time. FEMA will review all applications and disburse funding only after confirming that eligibility criteria have been met.
